Websites Without HTTPS (SSL Certificates) to be Flagged by Google Chrome From January 2017

Google will start to downgrade HTTP sites on its Chrome browser from January 2017 by marking them out as less secure in a bid to stop people visiting sites run by crooks and scammers.

The move means that legitimate website operators without HTTPS websites need to act. Google has long hinted at such a move so it should not come as a huge surprise.

"To help users browse the web safely, Chrome indicates connection security with an icon in the address bar. Historically, Chrome has not explicitly labelled HTTP connections as non-secure," said Emily Schechter from the Chrome Security team in a blog post.

"Beginning in January 2017 (Chrome 56), we'll mark HTTP sites that transmit passwords or credit cards as non-secure, as part of a long-term plan to mark all HTTP sites as non-secure.
http site to be flag by google chrome

"A substantial portion of web traffic has transitioned to HTTPS so far, and HTTPS use is consistently increasing. We recently hit a milestone with more than half of Chrome desktop page loads now served over HTTPS.

"In addition, since the time we released our HTTPS report in February, 12 more of the top 100 websites have changed their serving default from HTTP to HTTPS."

Google is very keen on this sort of thing, and recently applied the HTTPS padlock sign to Gmail.

"Studies show that users do not perceive the lack of a 'secure' icon as a warning and become blind to warnings that occur too frequently. Our plan to label HTTP sites more clearly and accurately as non-secure will take place in gradual steps, based on increasingly stringent criteria," said Schechter.

"Chrome 56 will label HTTP pages with password or credit card form fields as not secure, given their particularly sensitive nature.

"In following releases, we will continue to extend HTTP warnings, for example, by labelling HTTP pages as ‘not secure' in Incognito mode, where users may have higher expectations of privacy.

"Eventually, we plan to label all HTTP pages as non-secure, and change the HTTP security indicator to the red triangle that we use for broken HTTPS."

Opera For PC has Now got a portable Installer

Today, Opera developers announced a new nice feature. The ability to install Opera as a portable app was added to its installer. Portable apps have the benefit that they do not store settings in the Registry so the same set of settings can be used across different Windows PC or different Windows installations on the same PC. Once downloaded, you can simply run the portable app's EXE. The app does not need to be installed.

The revamped version of the Opera Installer now supports a portable installation mode. When you run the portable installer, it extracts a standalone version of Opera to a location specified by the user. By default, it detects removable drives connected to your PC and suggests to use one of them as the destination location. See the following screenshot:

Interested users can try the new installer by downloading it from the following location:

As of this writing, this new installer is an experimental feature, so it has arrived only on the developer channel. Once it is polished, it will be rolled out for stable and beta channel users.

Do you think the portable setup of the Opera browser is useful? How often do you use portable browsers? Tell us in the comments.

Introducing Android 7.0 Nougat; 8 Key New Features You May Look Out

Dudes with Android 4.4 Kitkat i guess your turn is actually over because even if you are running Android 5.0 Lollipop i can still consider you are out of the game because with the release of Android 7.0 known as Nougat or Android N before google has already move ahead to improved its Android based operating system and even though only some selected devices are going to receive the update for the time being, i guess those running Android 6.0 Marshmallow should always be ready to welcome the Android 7.0 Nougat on their devices sooner or later.

Bugs, patches, security fixes are the things that were fixed with the new android Nougat, and the introduction of over 250 major features on Android 7 is a great and smart move by Google, but today we can just look at the amazing 8 key new features of Android 7.

So now lets take a loot at the 8 key features of Android Nougat

Android Quick Settings

8 key new features of android nougat

We're big fans of Android's Quick Settings and Nougat makes it an even more powerful facet of the OS by providing full control over the layout. The tiles can be moved around at will and ordered just the way you want.

Multi-Tasking Feature

8 key new features of android nougat

Multi-window allows you to run two apps side by side in easily resizable windows. The amount of screen estate dedicated to each can be adjusted by dragging the slider control.

What's more, the Overview button has gained a new trick. Tapping the button twice switches between the two most recently used apps.

Notification Direct Reply

8 key new features of android 7 nougat

Nougat has added the ability to reply to messages and emails directly from your received notifications.

Aside from being able to fire off quick acknowledgements, this saves you having to open the app proper. One potential problem is the need for developers to implement the technology in apps, and only Google Hangouts is currently supported.

Google Play for Work

8 key new feature in Android 7 nougat

Google has strengthened Android for use in the enterprise. Nougat provides hardier file-based encryption by protecting and isolating files, and you can create a Work Profile to keep personal data separate from the default Android environment.

Your IT manager will able to deploy Android apps, prevent the installation of apps from unknown sources, assign policies that control information stored on your device, and perform remote wiping of business data.

Doze Power-Saving Energy

8 key new features on android 7 nougat

Google has further increased Doze's power-saving efficiency in Nougat. Before Nougat, Doze relied on your phone being in an idle state. That meant not nudging the motion sensors or gyro. You also had to leave the screen on and have the phone plugged into the mains.

The update is free of these limitations, so you can benefit from Doze's battery optimisation even when moving around.

Advanced 3D Rendering

8 key new features of android 7.0 nougat

Gamers will appreciate Nougat's support for the advanced Vulkan 3D rendering API.

Vulkan couples higher performance with lower CPU use, and provides games developers with greater control over the graphics processor. The screenshot above is taken from a gameplay demo that dazzles with reflections, motion blur, smoke and water effects, and more.

Seamless Updates

All new Android handsets sold from now running Nougat will support Seamless updates.

This means that updates can be installed in the background, saving you having to baby-sit the device through the process and waiting for it to optimise your apps.

New Emoji & Languages

8 key new features of android 7 nougat

If you like expressing yourself through the medium of emoji you'll appreciate the 72 new ones added to Nougat.

This brings the total to over 1,500, so there's bound to be one for almost every situation. The ability to use two or more languages at the same time is also a welcome feature.

Overall

As you know these are some of the important features attached to the Android 7 Nougat and i think the improvement is fair because all that you need is to get a hold of the new google OS or update your phone when the need arise.

Dropbox tells Users to Update Old Password Now

Dropbox has emailed users warning them to update their passwords, while at the same time claiming that it hasn't been hacked.

The email from the cloud storage company has been aimed at users who haven't updated their password since mid-2012 or earlier, explaining that they will be forced to do so next time they try to sign in.

The company was keen to emphasise that the measure is "purely preventative" and that there is no evidence that the site has been compromised in any way.

However, Dropbox was hacked in the middle of 2012 and that's maybe why it's targeting specific customers, although the hack was disclosed and widely reported at the time.
The support page explained: "Our security teams are always watching out for new threats to our users. As part of these ongoing efforts, we learned about an old set of Dropbox user credentials (email addresses plus hashed and salted passwords) that we believe were obtained in 2012. Our analysis suggests that the credentials relate to an incident we disclosed around that time.

dropbox warns users to update old password

"Based on our threat monitoring and the way we secure passwords, we don't believe that any accounts have been improperly accessed. Still, as one of many precautions, we’re requiring anyone who hasn’t changed their password since mid-2012 to update it the next time they sign in."

This information isn't in the rather perfunctory email, which is as vague as possible presumably to avoid scaring the horses.

Dropbox offers two-step verification and works with FIDO standard security keys, but even customers using these services are being asked to change just in case.

Users of 4chan and Reddit claimed in 2014 to have stumbled across a list of seven million Dropbox passwords, but the company strenuously denied that these were from a hack, and indeed from its customers' accounts at all.

Be Ready to Play Games on Facebook Platform

Facebook is making an audacious play for the gaming market in a deal with Unity Technologies, the company behind the popular Unity games development engine.

The surprise "strategic partnership" will see Unity integrate support for Facebook's platform, including the firm's forthcoming PC gaming platform which is currently under development.

The two companies will collaborate to build new capabilities into Unity to streamline the process for exporting and publishing games on Facebook, helping to build it up into a more sophisticated platform.

In the process, Facebook will inevitably challenge Google, Microsoft and Valve Software, the company behind the popular Steam gaming portal.

Facebook claimed that the deal will help games developers make more money via Facebook. The gaming model is more focused towards in-app purchases, which are typically eschewed by hardcore gamers, which Facebook claims made $2.5bn for web game developers in 2015.

"Developers channel their talent and passion into creating amazing games, but development is only part of the challenge," said Elliot Solomon, vice president of business development at Unity Technologies.

""Integrating tools that provide effortless access to Facebook's network is a key part of helping developers find the success they deserve."

A selected group of developers have already been given immediate access to a closed-alpha build of the export-to-Facebook functionality in Unity version 5.4, and applications are being invited from other games developers to join.

Applications are being accepted until the end of August, and new applicants will be taken up on an ongoing basis throughout the testing period.

Unity claims to have a 45 per cent share of the gaming engine market. The platform is used by 47 per cent of games developers, some 4.5 million people, and by 600 million gamers.

235,000 Twitter Accounts Get Suspended for Terrorism and Violence

Twitter has explained its ongoing efforts to rid the site of accounts that promote terrorism and violence, claiming to have suspended almost a quarter of a million accounts in the past six months.

Some 235,000 accounts were suspended between February and August, following the 125,000 that were suspended between mid-2015 and February 2016.

Twitter said that this underlines the company's efforts to go after accounts that break its rules, and that it is removing such accounts as quickly as possible.

“Daily suspensions are up over 80 per cent since last year, with spikes in suspensions immediately following terrorist attacks," the firm said.

"Our response time for suspending reported accounts, the amount of time these accounts are on Twitter, and the number of followers they accumulate have all decreased dramatically.

"We have also made progress in disrupting the ability of those suspended to immediately return to the platform. We have expanded the teams that review reports around the clock, along with their tools and language capabilities."

Twitter said that it is also working with other social platforms to share “information and best practices for identifying terrorist content”, although the company did not identify the other sites.
235000 twitter account suspended

The firm also explained that the fight against violence and terrorist accounts on Twitter is not easy, but that systems used to spot offensive content are improving.

“As we mentioned in February, and other companies and experts have also noted, there is no one 'magic algorithm' for identifying terrorist content on the internet," Twitter said.

"But we continue to use other forms of technology, like proprietary spam-fighting tools, to supplement reports from our users and help identify repeat account abuse.

“In fact, over the past six months these tools have helped us to automatically identify more than one third of the accounts we ultimately suspended for promoting terrorism.”

Twitter’s move to document its actions against such accounts comes after waves of criticism that the company has failed to take the problem of abusive content and messages on its site seriously enough.

This has been one cause of Twitter failing to grow its user base, and even losing some long-term users, as the site fights for growth in the shadow of its much larger rival Facebook.

ICANN will Take Over Control of Web DNS from US on October 1 This Year

The US is set to loosen its grip on the Domain Naming System (DNS) and leave the internet as a truly global entity, although not everyone is happy about the move.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a not-for-profit global organisation, will get control of the DNS on 1 October after the US received assurances that it was "ready" to take charge.

Many US politicians, most of them Republicans, oppose the move, seeing the US as 'protector' of the internet, and have expressed concerns at possible interference by rival superpowers like Russia and China.

As such it's no coincidence that this was all done and dusted before the forthcoming US elections.

The more keen-eyed will note that ICANN has been around for years and isn't making a big deal of this. That's because it has effectively run the show for years. What is actually being transferred is the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), an organisation dating back to the days of Arpanet.
icann to take control of dns from us

IANA is responsible for the root nameservers and time zone database. The rest has been ICANN for ages anyway. And even IANA is run by ICANN under contract.

So when you untangle this, what's actually happening is that the US government is removing the contract element to IANA and giving it to ICANN which, although US-based, is geographically neutral. It just has to be based somewhere.

Lawrence Strickling, assistant secretary for communications and information at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), explained all the things in a blog post.

"For the last 18 years, the US has been working with the global internet multi-stakeholder community to establish a stable and secure multi-stakeholder model of internet governance that ensures that the private sector, not governments, takes the lead in setting the future direction of the internet’s domain name system," he said.

"To help achieve this goal, NTIA in 1998 partnered with ICANN, a California-based non-profit, to transition technical DNS coordination and management functions to the private sector. NTIA’s current stewardship role was intended to be temporary."

ICANN made its case for the change last year, but the sheer amount of stalling led some to question the US commitment to letting go.

5G in Progress.. Nokia & BT Sign Research Deal

BT and Nokia have signed a deal to work together on the development of 5G technologies. The partnership has already started in earnest, and Nokia is testing its latest 5G kit at BT Lab’s Adastral Park facility. The agreement will also include the development of proof-of-concept trials around 5G technologies, and the development of standards and equipment that could be used for 5G networks. The 5G trials will focus on key areas, including mmWave radio and convergence, as well assessing how 5G could be used in areas such as the Internet of Things.

Another key focus will be on the potential ‘flexibility’ of 5G services so that capabilities can be scaled up and down for specific users, such as ensuring that mission-critical services have very low latency services, or that services requiring high bandwidth receive what they need.

This idea could cause problems, however, as it would go against the essence of net neutrality, i.e. that all services should receive the same network treatment so that the web is a level playing field.

Operators have already raised concerns that this could hamper development and deployments around 5G, as noted by a consortium of EU telecoms operators including BT and Nokia earlier this year.

“The telecoms industry warns that the current net neutrality guidelines create significant uncertainties around 5G return on investment,” it said.

Nevertheless, Howard Watson, CEO of BT Technology, Service & Operations, claimed that working with Nokia is vital for 5G networks to reach their potential.

“It’s still early days for 5G technology, but experience tells us that a collaborative approach is key to success,” he said.

“We’re delighted to be working with Nokia to drive a common approach to 5G, and to develop exciting use cases which bring together our combined experience in fixed and mobile technologies.”

Cormac Whelan, head of the UK & Ireland at Nokia, echoed this sentiment. “5G is the communications technology of the future, and it will transform how we communicate with each other, as well as communicate with devices and ‘things’," he said.

"Nokia is delighted to be working with BT in laying the foundations for 5G adoption in the coming years, and in helping define how this technology will enable exciting and innovative experiences.”

Employee Arrested Over Sage Data Breach in UK

A 32-year-old woman has been arrested and bailed in connection with the data breach at accountancy software firm Sage. City of London Police confirmed that the woman was arrested at Heathrow Airport on "suspicion of conspiracy to defraud" and is a current employee of the company. The arrest comes two days after Sage admitted to a data breach when "unauthorised access" was gained by someone using an internal company log-in. Sage said that the personal information of employees at 280 organisations in the UK were compromised as a result of the attack.

"We believe there has been some unauthorised access using an internal log-in to the data of a small number of our UK customers, so we are working closely with the authorities to investigate the situation," Sage said in a statement released over the weekend.

The company has informed the Information Commissioner's Office and the City of London Police.

Sage did not reveal any further information about the breach, whether or how the data was obtained, how many people might be affected, the information that may have been compromised or even the services that were cracked.

The statement also raises questions about the security and monitoring of the company's authentication mechanisms. Sage did not say whether the breach was performed by a current or former employee, or whether the log-in credentials were compromised in some way.

Sage has around six million SMB customers around the world, and the unauthorised access of 280 customer accounts therefore represents only a small proportion of its total customer base. The company claimed that only UK-based customers were affected.

Thomas Fischer, threat researcher and global security advocate at Digital Guardian, laid the blame squarely at Sage's door, suggesting that the company's security was inadequate.

"It appears that the Sage breach came from an insider. Insider threats are almost always preventable if the right people-management processes and tools are in place," he said.

"This is the case even if the employee is a so-called reluctant insider, meaning that, for example, an external party has compromised their account.

"Sage also claims that it's currently unsure how the data was compromised. Again, with the proper investments in IT security this should be easily controllable and identifiable in a very short period of time."

The admission of a security breach at Sage comes after a week of revelations from retail systems vendors that appear to have been targeted by a gang of Russian hackers.

Face Off Comparison Between Blackberry DTEK50 Vs Blackberry Priv

You all know that the era of blackberry Classic devices are actually over, gone are the days when you can't be able to browse with your blackberry phone without subscribing and if you can remember that subscription for blackberry devices was actually 3k. Well let mi not dig out the memories of Blackberry smartphone in other to avoid giving stories that touched the heart. Android was the worst enemies of blackberry and it punch blackberry OS devices out of the field like Floyd Mayweather which in turns make the Company joins the line in producing Android Smartphone.

Blackberry, when producing there Android Based-Smartphone has lay more emphasis on security making there phone as one of the most secure and private device one most have. Both Blackberry DTEK50 and blackberry Priv are high-end smartphone with a lot of amazing features even though Blackberry Priv is almost a year old in the market. Now lets see this face off comparison between the blackberry DTEK50 and Blackberry Priv and you gotta decide which one to go for and why.

Differences between Blackberry DTEK50 and Blackberry Priv

Design

BlackBerry DTEK50: 147x72.5x7.4mm, 135g, microUSB
BlackBerry Priv: 147x77.2x9.4mm, 192g, microUSB

The Blackberry Priv is 5.4in display makes it bigger than the DTEK50, and it's almost 183mm in length when fully extended. That size doesn't necessarily make it cumbersome as the keyboard can be used with one hand, but at 192g it might be a little too heavy for some.

There's a lot to like about the Priv's keyboard - if you have small fingers. It can even be used as a makeshift trackpad with its swipe functions.

Display

BlackBerry DTEK50: 5.2in 1,920x1,080 resolution
BlackBerry Priv: 5.4in 2,560x1,440 resolution

Sacrifices need to be made somewhere for a device that costs almost half as much, and the DTEK50 loses the beautiful QHD AMOLED display found on the Priv. The DTEK50 opts for an IPS LCD panel instead, but both should be praised for their deep blacks and punchy colours.

Operating System

BlackBerry DTEK50: Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow
BlackBerry Priv: Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, upgradable to Marshmallow

For better or for worse, the Priv marked BlackBerry's move away from the firm's BlackBerry 10 OS. The DTEK50 and Priv are both Android devices, but they retain at least some of the BlackBerry software magic that gives them their hardened security edge.

The DTEK50 and the Priv benefit from monthly security patches, although BlackBerry has remained quiet on the subject of product support lifecycles.

Processor (RAM)

BlackBerry DTEK50: Hexa-core Snapdragon 617, 3GB of RAM
BlackBerry Priv: Octa-core Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM

You're not going to see particularly incendiary performance from either handset, and that's despite the Priv using the more powerful Snapdragon 808.

The devices are fairly evenly matched in day-to-day performance, so these average benchmarks shouldn't dissuade potential buyers who favour security over speed.

Cameras

BlackBerry DTEK50: Rear 13MP, f/2.0, dual-LED flash, 8MP front-facing
BlackBerry Priv: Rear 18MP, f/2.2, OIS, dual-LED flash, 2MP front-facing

The Priv may disappoint in terms of front-facing camera technology, but we don't think selfies will be high on the agenda of the typical BlackBerry aficionado. However, elsewhere it storms ahead with powerful 18MP Schneider-Kreuznach optics and optical image stabilisation.

Battery

BlackBerry DTEK50: 2,610mAh
BlackBerry Priv: 3,410mAh

The Priv has the beefier battery of the two. Those numbers don't lie either, as under tests we found that the Priv lasted almost two days compared with barely one for the DTEK50.

The Quick Charge 2.0 standard is supported on both BlackBerrys, but we fear the DTEK50 will rely on it more than the other.

Storage (Memory)

BlackBerry DTEK50: 16GB, microSD slot
BlackBerry Priv: 32GB, microSD slot

The DTEK50 draws the short straw when it comes to storage capacity with just 16GB, but both phones can be extended up to a maximum of 2TB.

Price

BlackBerry DTEK50: £275
BlackBerry Priv: From around £399

The DTEK50 was always supposed to be a mid-tier device, and the price pretty much confirms this.

Overral

Neither phone can easily be mistaken for a BlackBerry, but you could argue that the Priv with its slide-out Qwerty keyboard comes nearest.

If a physical keyboard is top of your wishlist there's only one logical choice here, and the recent reduction in price also makes a strong case for the Priv. The DTEK50 is just a little bit 'meh', while its predecessor at least has something about it and has a stronger specs sheet.

Snowden Blames Russia Over US NSA Hack

The auction of hacking tools reportedly stolen from a server belonging to Equation Group, a hacking outfit linked with the US National Security Agency (NSA), is a coded message to the US authorities, according to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. He believes that the attack was genuine and that the group does have tools used by the NSA up until June 2013 when Snowden went public. However, Snowden suggested that the auction is not intended as a shakedown of the rich and gullible, but to send a message to the NSA to back off. Snowden described in a series of tweets how online hacking by intelligence services works. "The hack of an NSA malware staging server is not unprecedented, but the publication of the take is," he tweeted.

"NSA traces and targets malware C2 servers in a practice called Counter Computer Network Exploitation, or CCNE. So do our rivals. NSA is often lurking undetected for years on the C2 and ORBs (proxy hops) of state hackers. This is how we follow their operations.

"This is how we steal their rivals' hacking tools and reverse-engineer them to create 'fingerprints' to help us detect them in the future.

"Here's where it gets interesting: the NSA is not made of magic. Our rivals do the same thing to us - and occasionally succeed. Knowing this, NSA's hackers (TAO) are told not to leave their hack tools ('binaries') on the server after an op. But people get lazy.
snowden blames russia over attack at nsa

"What's new? NSA malware staging servers getting hacked by a rival is not new. A rival publicly demonstrating they have done so is. Why did they do it? No-one knows, but I suspect this is more diplomacy than intelligence, related to the escalation around the DNC hack."

Snowden suggested that the security services of his current hosts, Russia, are behind it.

"That could have significant foreign policy consequences. Particularly if any of those operations targeted US allies [and] particularly if any of those operations targeted elections. Accordingly, this may be an effort to influence the calculus of decision-makers wondering how sharply to respond to the DNC hacks," he said.

"TL;DR: this leak looks like somebody sending a message that an escalation in the attribution game could get messy fast.

"Bonus: when I came forward, NSA would have migrated offensive operations to new servers as a precaution - it's cheap and easy. So? So the undetected hacker squatting on this NSA server lost access in June 2013. Rare public data point on the positive results of the leak."

He signed off on the series of tweets: "You're welcome, @NSAGov. Lots of love."
